 NZGCF Christmas Newsletter 2011

Dear Supporter

With Christmas almost upon us, we find ourselves asking once again 'where has the year gone?' The truth of the old adage 'the older you get the faster time flies' seems to grow stronger with each passing year! As we head toward the holiday season, it is always good to reflect back on some of the highlights of 2011 and to also look forward to all the potential that 2012 holds.

2011 saw us welcome four new Trustees to our Board – Jock Irvine as Chairman and Nicola Edwards, Bridgette Jackson, and Sarah Hutchings, as Trustees. In October, we also welcomed a new General Manager, Michelle Quirk. In addition to getting up to speed with the workings of the Foundation, Michelle has been busy meeting our key sponsors and supporters as well as finding us a new office. As this newsletter goes to press, we can confirm that in 2012 we will be sharing an office with The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. We are extremely excited about this move and believe there is a great fit between our organisations given our mutual focus on improving health outcomes for NZ women. Our new office is based in Falcon Street, Parnell so feel free to pop in and say hi!
Other recent highlights include the successful launch of our educational DVD ‘Gynaecological Cancers: what you need to know’ that has received significant media coverage and spurred several health features in magazines and regional newspapers; our selection (out of 350 applications!) for Auckland Airport’s ’12 Days of Christmas’ initiative that includes a $10,000 donation and a profile in the NZ Herald (read the article here); the annual Anita Boon Pro-Am golf tournament which was once again a great success; and an excellent gynaecological health seminar held in South Auckland that was attended by more than 50 health professionals. This seminar was a collaborative project with Alliance Health, Mangere Family Doctors, Diagnostic Medlab, with Hologic also involved and it was a great opportunity to raise awareness and diagnostic skills among health professionals working in South Auckland where there are high Maori and Pasifika communities, two of our high-incidence groups.
As we wind down to the end of the year, a couple of ‘headsups’ for 2012. First is to keep an eye out for our revamped quarterly newsletter that will begin in early 2012. Second is to remember to send us your personal stories as we find these inspiring and often poignant reminders of why we work so hard to raise awareness of these cancers. Third is to check our website and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nzgcf).
Thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and supporters – your support is very much appreciated. We wish you and your families a safe, healthy, and relaxing Christmas and New Year and we look forward to catching up with you all again in 2012.
Kind regards,
Michelle and the team at NZGCF
